Library Thing

Not sure I could really see the point of LibraryThing. It did make me take a closer look at the template editing in Blogger and how you can add page elements. That was fun!

Rollyo

I created a searchroll of a list of CSS web sites. It is a good idea, but the performance is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Image generators

I have decide that I really like RSS. It is great way of getting updates.

The online image generators really irritated me. I tried a couple that did not do what I wanted. Even the Bob dylan was a flash file. I ended up taking a screendump and pasting it into The Gimp to get a jpg I could upload.

Allen Ginsberg in the photo background by the way. I was watching a documentary on Jack Kerouac last night.

Bloglines

I have created a Bloglines account. I Have subscribed to some feeds. Mostly on web design. It will be interesting to see how useful that is. I tend to get my knowledge from reading computer books.

This is the "blogroll"

Autum photo

First Signs of Fall, originally uploaded by lynnmohd2.

I created a Flickr account and used the "Blog this" link to publish the photo at Blogger. To do that you have to give Flickr permission to use the Blogger account. Which I did not feel sure about. I can imagine that if a number of accounts are interconnected the spectre of identity theft raises it's head.

Flickr

Been having a look at flickr. On thing I did like was the maps interface.

http://www.flickr.com/map/

You can do a keyword search and the search results are distributed on a map. I did a search for photos with the tag beach, and you can choose beach photos from around the world.

I tried adding an image by using a URL. 2 problems. Firstly Flickr should make the URLs to the images more accessible. I had to use the save dialogue box to get the filename and then add that to the photopage url. Finally when I had a URL, I tried to add the the image to Blogger using "add an image from the web". When I viewed the html created by Blogger, it was garbled. A bit more information on Flickr about attribution would have been nice too.

First post - Take 2

My first post was a marxist deconstruction of the children's television program Brum. I decided that was a bit out there so I will talk about something else.

INKSCAPE. This is a program I downloaded recently. It is a open source vector drawing program. In short it is a free program you can use to create web graphics. It's native file format is SVG, which is actually a xml file. In theory you could edit the image file using a text editor like notepad. It can export images to PNG format which modern web browsers can display. If you want to a different file format you can open the PNG file and export it as a JPEG or GIF file using GIMP. I can create basic graphics with this such as the logo above but am still learning how to use it.

GIMP is also a free download. GIMP is a raster image editor (think Photoshop). I am very impresssed. I have been cropping images, resizing images (scaling) and converting between different file formats.
